New Delhi: almost sixth of 6,965 Indian ground water assessment units (block / tehsil / taluka) ‘over-exploited’ and this together with two other caring categories – ‘Critical’ and ‘semi-critical’ – account for 35% of the total unit What is assessed, according to the new findings of the central ground water body (CGWB) in a report that might soon be published.
Although the thinning of groundwater continues to be concerned because of indiscriminate extraction in several countries, the latest assessment of ‘dynamic groundwater resources’ in the country shows signs of an increase due to increased refills and efficiency of water use by 2020 compared to 2017.
As Results, the number of ‘over-exploited’ and ‘critical’ assessment units have decreased while the number of units ‘secure’ has increased compared to the previous assessment carried out three years ago.
The ‘Over-Exploited’ unit is those where ground water extraction substantially exceeds the refill of groundwater that can be refilled every year.
Sharing the main points of his findings with the Ministry of ‘Jal Shakti’, CGWB recently linked an increase in groundwater situations to increase refills and decrease extraction (harvesting rainwater).
Officials on the Board noted that the decline in extraction was mainly due to the increase in the availability of surface water resources.
