Ramanathapuram: More than 100 kg of plastic waste that washed the land on Krusadai Island in the Gulf of Mannar Off Tamil Nadu was cleaned by the Forestry Department personnel on Wednesday.
The drive was carried out by the team of seven personnel of the Ministry of Forestry, including observers, guards, and anti-hunting observers.
Mandapam Forest Ranger G Venkates said that they were carrying out such drives every week when they patrolled the island, which was one of the seven islands in the Mandapam range.
While around 50 kg of plastic and waste which was once collected on the island there was an area of 68 hectares every week multiplying this time, he said.
“Plastic bottles and sachets of milk are thrown from ships and fishing vessels for the main part of the waste that we collect,” Ranger said.
Venkatesh added that other waste items they collected include glass bottles and clothing.
They were taken to the mainland in sacks and were handed over to the local body for the right disposal.
The department personnel say that the island can be saved from pollution if fishermen and sailors act responsibly and keep waste on their ship and throw it safely on the beach.
