12 pilgrims were killed in Vaishno Devi Stampede on New Year’s Day

Jammu: At least 12 pilgrims were destroyed to death and 16 injured on New Year’s Day in the biggest tragedy in the Vaishno Devi Temple as a surge of a crowd caused Stampede around 2.15 in the morning near the Gate No.
3 Outside the Popular Sanctum Cave Temple in the Tributa Bukit in Kashmir Rasi District.
The tragedy occurred “because of a fight between two groups of pilgrims”, the Temple Board said in a statement without giving further details.
Officials said the authorities responded quickly, order in the crowd was restored and pilgrimage returned after almost four hours of the morning tragedy.

Two bodies were sent by air and nine roads to their original places, while someone would be flown on Sunday morning from Jammu.
A spokesman for the Temple Council said the Governor of Manoj Sinha has announced the ex Gratia Direct Rs 10 lakh to the death of the dead and Rs 2 lakh until the injured.

“Very sad to lose life …” Modi wrote on Twitter and announced a compensation package.
The junior minister at PMO, Jitendra Singh, ran to Katra to take a stock of the situation.
Up cm Yogi Adityanath also expressed sadness over the tragedy.
