Mangaluru: Responding to the literacy program for prison inmates, which was launched by the State Government of State on November 1, has been encouraging in the Dakshina Kannada district prison, where 14 undertrials have registered in the program.
The initiative was launched by the Government of Karnataka after a survey found that almost a third of the prisoners in the country’s prison were illiterate.
Although one of the objectives of this initiative is to provide an opportunity to educate inmates to provide lessons to their fellow prisoners, authorities in the Dakshina Kannada district prison in Mangaluru have appointed a dedicated teacher, who has been done to work in a prison underneath education program .
Chandan J Patel, which is the Supervisor of Dakshina Kannada District Jail when the literacy program is launched, pointing to some of the challenges they face in implementing the program.
“The lack of motivation to learn among the prisoners is one of the main challenges, while inmates who want to learn often face ridicule from educated detainees.
However, since prison only has undertrials, they can always choose to get out of the program so they are released,” Patel said .
He pointed down in the 65th minute who had learned to write his name as a symbol of the success of the initiative in prison.
Dakshina Kannada District Jail Inspector BT Obaleshappa, who recently took over, said that the authorities in prison had many programs planned through the center of skills development for the welfare of prisoners in the pipeline.
“At the order of the prison department, we are looking to complete prisoners with various skills so that they allow to lead a comfortable life once they are released from prison.
We work with the Center for Skills Development, and with assistance from the district government and Mangaluru City Police, we have organized Various programs, such as computer training sessions, train prisoners tend to plant nursery, etc.
We will continue with the literacy program too, “Obaleshappa told Toi.
During his duty in prison in Davanagere and Hassan, Obaleshappa succeeded in developing plant nurseries maintained by prisoners.
