Mysuru: Organs who are harvested from two individuals who die the brain provide new leases of life to 14 other people.
A total of 14 organs including kidneys, heart valves and corneas were harvested from a 40-year-old man, and a 48-year-old woman, who was taken to the Apollo Hospital on August 16.
The condition of the two patients is very important when they are taken to the hospital, and on closer inspection, it was found that they showed signs of brain stem infarction, and shifted to the intensive care unit where they were placed on a support system of life, said Mysuru Apollo Hospital Vice – President Ng Bharatheesha Reddy.
The 40-year-old man had met with an accident on the road, while the woman suffered from brain bleeding.
After relatives of patients agree to donate their organs, they are harvested according to the protocol set.
Of the 14 organs harvested from two people, two hearts and as many kidneys were transplanted to patients at Apollo Hospital, while the remaining organs were sent to another hospital.
