Yangon: At least 15 people sank on Sunday while crossing the cross-flood road in Myanmar to reach the Buddhist temple for the festival, rescue workers told AFP.
The tragedy was opened because thousands of worshipers tried to reach Kyeik HNE Pagoda, which lies in rocky outcrops in about three kilometers (two miles) outside the coast near the city of Thanbyuzayat in the southern state.
Local officials said some died when they tried to cross the cross-marked road, which was only about four meters, while the tide was too high.
“We usually let people come at 6:30 a.m.
but they will not listen to us and start trying to walk too early,” said Local Official Nai Sahai Eain told AFP.
More sinking later when they jostled from a busy path to the sea.
Ko Kyaw Thu, an emergency respondent from Thanbyzayat, told AFP that 15 bodies had been taken to the hospital and three people were still missing.
The local resident Nai Wona told AFP The Causeway was not quite marked clearly, making it difficult to navigate.
