Tuticorin: More than 2.6 tons of turmeric intended to be smuggled to Sri Lanka was arrested from the Chippikulam Sea Shore in Tuticorin District Tamil Nadu in early Wednesday.
Turmeric, stacked in 87 bags, must be smuggled into Sri Lanka on a fishing vessel.
According to the police, the ‘Q’ branch got the turmeric tip-off was smuggled from the village.
A team led by Inspector Vijaya Anitha saw three young men with suspicious conditions on two motorbikes at around 1.30 in the morning and took it to be questioned.
The question revealed that all three were identified as R Vineeth, 21, Kulathur, and J Rabiston, 31, and H Sirilas, 31, from KeelavaiPpar – have tried to smuggle turmeric to Sri Lanka for Irudhayasvas from KeelalavaiPpar.
The team confiscated 2,610 kg of turmeric, two motorbikes and three cellphones from the trio.

This is the second confiscation of the second turmeric in the Tuticorin district in about a week.
On June 30, the police confiscated 2.5 tons of turmeric which had to be smuggled into Sri Lanka from Therespuram.
