Port-au-Prince: Two moderate earthquakes rocked southwest Haiti on Monday, killing two people, injuring dozens of students and damaging hundreds of homes for creating panic in an area shaken by a strong tremor that killed more than 2,000 last summer.
Magnitude 5.3 An earthquake at 8:16 am (1316 GMT) followed by an earthquake of 5.1 almost an hour later.
Both of them centered on the South Peninsula Haiti, west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to US geological surveys.
It is said that both occur around 10 kilometers (six miles) below the surface.
The Haitian Civil Protection Agency said that at least two people died and dozens of school children were injured, as they added that 50 people aged between 15 and 23 were in a state of being surprised and taken to the hospital.
Officials said 191 houses were destroyed and 591 were damaged in one region.
Yves Bosse, officials were selected for the South Department of Nippes, told the Associated Press that one person died when the earthquake caused landslides in the sand mine.
He said cracked houses and the business was closed for that day.
“People are afraid to return to their homes,” he said.
Sylvera Guillame, Director of the Haiti Civil Protection Agency for the southern region of the country, told AP that schools in the area closed and sent children as precautions.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry offered condolences to the victims and said his government would fully support those affected.
A 7.2 big earthquake struck Haiti southwest on August 14 last year, killing more than 2,200 people and damaged or destroyed around 1.37,500 houses.
