The pilot project is part of the ‘Urban LEDS II’ Urban LEDs II ‘project funded by the European Commission, implemented in collaboration with South Asia’s icle in Nagpur.
The NSSCDCL and IClei team conducted a scientific investigation to identify the possibility of the groundwater refill zone in the city, given the increase in demand for water and critical needs to increase the table of groundwater in the region.
Two NMC-Run Schools – Sant Kabir and Bharat Nagar School – are chosen to develop groundwater refills through rainwater harvest, with a combined capacity of around 8 latric liters per year.
CEO of NSSCDCL Buveneswari S said monitoring remote ground water level and water quality using IoT is an innovative and unique part of the project.
“Critical parameters such as pH, TDS (total solid dissolved), the level of electrical conductivity and ground water will be monitored real-time to oversee system performance,” he explained.
Based on initial technical studies and pilot projects, detailed plans throughout the city are being developed.
The NMC vision is to benefit groundwater refill projects through rainwater harvest throughout the city, using design and scientifically appropriate methodology, the NSSCDCL CEO said.
While inaugurating the system, the Mayor of Dayashankar Tiwari praised the efforts of NMC and Nagpur Smart City, by saying necessary to save water for better tomorrow.
NMC also reuses and recycles waste water and supplies it to a power plant, added the mayor.
