Mumbai: The Humboldt Penguin colony at the Byculla Zoo has two new members, both of them hatch at home, taking the number of birds in steeping to nine.
The first, named Oreo, is hatched on May 1 and the second, which has not been named, on August 19 with a pair of breeding separate from the seven colonies adults, four of whom are women.
The zoo is currently covered with visitors because of covid restrictions.
The first girl, Oreo, was born from Daisy and Donald, both of them were five and a half years old.
The latest born of the flipper (eight) and molt (five); The pair also produced hatching on independence day in 2018, but died from birth anomalies within a week.
The news about 2021 births was arrested because the zoo initially planned an announcement on October 1, when Oreo will complete five months.
“We have not determined the sex of the flipper and molt girls because they are still in the nesting area with their parents.
For now, we let their parents raise it.
Our VETS only helps by feeding parents every 2-3 hours (with fish like Mackerel and Sardine ) So that the pair in turn continues to feed a girl, “said the director of the Zoo Dr.
Sanjay Tripathi.
Gender determination will be carried out through one of three methods: feather test, sample inspection of the remnants of the egg hatch, or a girl’s blood sample.
Oreo, who is now more than four months old, has been mixed well in the colony.
His parents gradually introduced him to the others, protecting him every time he would be attacked, because Humboldt penguins were sometimes vulnerable to doing.
“His parents also taught him to defend himself and even attacked others if necessary,” said an official zoo.
“At present Oreo does not enter the nest and mostly get along with penguin adult women named Bubble (the only adult in colonies without partners) and roam in the cage.”
