Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation, The Urban Civic Body, on Wednesday issued a notification to more than 200 private educational institutions, which included several top schools, to avoid property tax for a long time.
Commissioner GMC Devasish Sharma said the total expected tax is estimated to be almost RS 7 Crore.
“We have served the notification to the institution and gave a 30-day deadline for them to respond,” he added.
He said some top institutions have contributions to Rs 50 Lakh’s song to Rs 1 Crore.
“However, one of the main private schools in Guwahati, who has a contribution of Rs 50 Lakh, has immediately responded to the notification.
It has also paid 50% of contributions and said the remaining amount will be paid in installments, which is fine.

The Commissioner said the purpose behind the notification served not to take immediate action against the authorities.
“We try to make them understand how important it is to pay property tax on time.
We will re-issue notifications if they fail to respond or not pay taxes in the specified time period,” he said.
In October, GMC presents a notification to 66 private hospitals and nursing homes in the city, asking them to submit “residential certificates”.
Notifications are served to hospitals with the aim of assessing construction, if there is no permission of citizenship citizenship required and thus, avoiding property tax.
Urban bodies produce very low income, which have faced difficulties in carrying out development work.
The Commissioner said that the body produced only around 10-crore rs income per month after the lock was late last year.
Sharma added that there are many companies in the city that avoid property taxes.
He appealed to people to pay property taxes and contribute to development.
