250 shanties gutted in fire at Kapurthala

KAPURTHALA: Almost 250 shanties here have been gutted in a fire which broke out on Wednesday afternoon, said officers. There was no record of any casualty from the episode, they explained, including fire tenders were pressed into service to put the blaze out. Over 1,000 migrant labourers are left homeless because of this fire episode. The government has organized food to them, ” he said. Deputy Commissioner Deepti Uppal said that the government will evaluate the loss brought on by the blaze and could compensate for the dwellers. The reason behind fire couldn’t be ascertained up to now, Uppal said. There are over 500’jhuggis’ (shanties) in the northwest of Kapurthala-Sultanpurlodhi street close to the railroad coach mill.
