Nashik: The Maharashtra Congress unit suffered a setback as 28 party corporators sitting from Malegaon Municipal Corporation, including Mayor of Tahira Shaikh, joining NCP in front of Deputy Chief of Minister Ajit Pawar, in Mumbai on Thursday.
Congress-Shiv Sena Alliance is in power in the Civic Agency in the city of Textiles.
The mayor’s husband and Senior Corporate Corporator Shaikh Rashid also joined NCP.
The Mayor said that Corporate Corporators were ‘disappointed’ with the leadership of the State Congress to do anything to strengthen the party at Malegaon Town, which has become a congressional fortress for more than three decades.
“We have asked the state leadership to ensure that Maleon Civic Body gets adequate funds for development.
But even this problem was ignored by the leadership of the Congress,” said Mayor.
Shaikh Rashid, who has resigned as President of the Malegaon City Congress three months ago, said that even after his resignation, no one from the party who cared to find out why he resigned from the post.
“We will strengthen NCP in the textile city before local civilian polls matured in May this year,” Rashid added.
