BENGALURU: The number of active job openings rose marginally last month to 205,000, from 200,000 in April, with a majority of those added in the last two weeks of the month, as per data from specialist staffing firm Xpheno.
The recovery in active job openings for May was helped by the internet-enabled services sector which had over 26,000 active openings, a growth of 10% sequentially.
The software sector put out 4% more active openings in May compared to April, while the IT Services sector was stagnant and retained the near same volume of active openings.
The BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) sector, a key employment driver, also remained stagnant.
“The current context of return of widespread lockdowns and with potentially longer tenures, had the internet enabled players buzzing and prepping for action.
The internet powered commerce and consumption models are leading the way to bring personal and enterprise agility in the face of geographic lockdowns,” Xpheno said.
A slowdown in the second half of March, followed by a 31% drop in April and a weak start for May were all in alignment with the varying intensities of the pandemic impact.
About 60,000 white collar jobs were added during the first half of May, but the second half saw a surge.
IT function jobs – jobs which are tech in nature but belonging not to the IT industry, such as a tech administrator in a FMCG firm – were 7% higher in May at 98,000, while engineering functions closed at 56,000 openings, as against 54,000 in April.
Sales and business development functions rose by 4% and 6% respectively.
The report said the top five metros put out over 94,000 active job openings in May.
Bengaluru retained its position as the top contributor, accounting for 15% of overall active job openings, while Hyderabad was second at 10%.
