3,300 water bodies to restore in Haryana to increase groundwater refills

Gurgaon: In the steps to overcome the problem of thinning of groundwater in Haryana, the state government has identified 3,342 waterbodies, which will be restored in the next two years.
According to the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA), there was a thinning of ground water at alarming level in 110 of 141 blocks in Haryana, with 85 blocks classified as ‘exploited’, 12 as ‘critical’ and 13 as ‘semi-critical’.
The government has identified 2,461 waterbodies in the ‘Over Comploited’ zone, 307 in ‘Critical’ and 574 in ‘semi-critical’ and plans to recover it in the next two years.
During the Webinar-‘Creating Synergy between wetlands and water management carried out by the Ministry of Forestry State, Deputy Manager of the Management Authority of Haryana Pond and Waste Water, Prabhakar Kumar Verma, said, “The state has worked to identify water bodies and preserve them.
We have provided Unique ID to more than 18,000 pools.
A total of 3,342 ponds are in 110 blocks, which has a thinning problem of groundwater.
We have a plan to restore it in the next two years, ensuring the recovery of the water table.
“Thinning of the water table is a big problem in Haryana, Who has witnessed a decrease in a 19% overall in the past five years.
This country attracts 137% of groundwater resources that can be extracted, which is the third highest in this country.
The national average is at 63%, according to data 2020 from CGWA.
During the webinar, the additional Secretary Jal Jeevan Mission Bharat Lal said water conservation was very important to save wetlands.
At 80%, said Lal, maximum ground water used on agriculture.
Therefore, the government must manage water resources, he continued.

The Chief Executive of the World Spacious Funds, Ravi Singh, said that new technology, engineers and scientific research can help in wetland conservation.
“The state government needs to formulate policies for wetland conservation,” he said.
Water animals have the first right in the water body, Singh said, adding that the right management of water is very important for their survival.
