39 lakh Individuals Homeless in India in 2020 Because of climate Issues, conflicts: Report

NEW DELHI: As many as 39 lakh people in India were homeless in 2020 because of climate problems and conflicts, which makes it the fourth largest worst-hit nation on earth to own such a large number of inner displacements, a new report said on Friday.
The top 3 nations with high inner displacements annually have been China, Philippines and Bangladesh, in which more than four million people have been homeless, as stated by the State of India’s Environment Report 2021 published by the Centre for Science and Environment.
The report said that 76 percent of the inner displacements internationally in 2020 have been triggered by climate crises.
It stated 4.05 crore people were homeless in the world annually out of that, 3.07 crore individuals were homeless as a result of climate problems and 98 lakh as a result of violence and conflicts.
Back in India, 39 lakh people were homeless in 2020 because of climate problems, violence and conflicts, ” the report said.
But the majority of the displacements happened because of significant climate problems such as avalanches and landslides from Jammu and Kashmir, flooding in Tamil Nadu, glacial lake outburst at Uttarakhand, Cyclone Nivar at Puducherry and Cyclone Burevi at Kerala and Tamil Nadu, ” stated.
In addition, it stated an average of approximately 3.73 million people annually were homeless between 2008 and 2020, nearly all by flood during the monsoon.
“India can also be likely to other abrupt and slow-onset risks, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, storm surges and droughts,” it stated.
The report estimated that India could visit 2.3 million inner displacements annually as a result of earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, cyclonic storms and winds.
According to the report, the previous decade saw the maximum amount of cyclonic storms across the north western Indian Ocean as the 1970s.
Between 1971 and 2020, 127 cyclonic storms struck India, from that, the highest cyclones (33) were listed between 2011 and 2020.
Five cyclonic storms happened in 2020 alone.
Even though Cyclone Amphan spanned the West Bengal coast over Sundarbans on May 20 this season also claimed 90 lives and around 4,000 possessions, Cyclone Nisarga spanned Maharashtra shore on June 3.
It claimed four lives along with 2,000 livestock.
Cyclone Nivar spanned Tamil Nadu along with Puducherry coasts near north west of Puducherry and claimed 12 lives and 10,836 lands over Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
Finally, Cyclone Burevi claimed nine lives and 200 lands.
Cyclone Gati made landfall over Somalia shore.
The report said that 21 significant weather events maintained over 1,374 resides in 2020.
Heavy rains, flooding and thunderstorms were accountable for over 51 percent of these deaths.
Lightning was responsible for 33 percent of those deaths.
The information contributed in the report demonstrated that from those 1,374 deaths from the nation, 300 people died in Bihar alone.
In Uttar Pradesh, 189 individuals lost their lives, although 144 people died in Jharkhand because of intense weather events.
In Assam, heavy rain and flooding took 129 resides in 2020, whereas 73 people died in Maharashtra and 72 each in Madhya Pradesh and Kerala, ” it stated.
Other nations where people died because of extreme weather events include Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan, ” the report included.
