WASHINGTON: The United States has evacuated four Americans from Afghanistan to a bordering country, a State Department official said on Monday, in his first land evacuation since the withdrawal of August 31.
About 124,000 people were evacuated last month from Kabul in a large US airlift in the country and other foreign nationals and vulnerable foreigners when the Taliban took control there.
US officials have said around 100 more residents who say they want to go stay in Afghanistan.
“We have facilitated the departure of four Americans from Afghanistan through land routes.
Our embassy greeted America when they passed the border to the third country,” the official said without describing.
US representative Ronny Jackson identified four as from his district in Texas, said in a twitter post they left “after 2 weeks & some life-threatening efforts.” With US forces left, evacuation flights ended, and commercial fights avoided Kabul airport, which did not have air traffic control, thousands of Afghans focused on taking off potentially dangerous.
Countries that are bordered by Afghanistan including Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Iran.
The Department of Foreign Affairs on Sunday published a declaration of around 100 countries committed to helping Afghanistan achieve goals outside Afghanistan.
However, there is no neighbor of Afghanistan registering.
Tajikistan has promised to receive 100,000 Afghan refugees, while Uzbekistan is committed to enabling transit through its territory to Americans and potentially other people from Afghanistan.
But it is not clear how many people, if any, the two countries are really allowed to enter.
Pakistan – Home for more than 1.4 million Afghan refugees – have recognized around 2,000 Afghans employed by foreign missions, non-governmental institutions, and a one-month non-government transit group, diplomatic source said on anonymity conditions.
