Chennai: Some efforts to save a girl from sinking in a pool that caused two friends, her mother and another woman sank in the body of water in Gummidipoondi in the Tiruvallur district on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as M Jothi, 38, R Suganthi, 40, her daughter R Ashmitha, 14, and her friends G Narmada, 13, and D Jeevitha, 14, all from Jalan Seethammal in Karumbupuppam Village in Gummidipoondi.
According to the police, the victims had gone to the Anglamman temple pool to wash clothes.
Ashmitha invited her friends to join her.
The girls initially played near the pool when women asked them not to enter into the water, the police said witnesses.
Around 3:30 a.m., some people who came to the pool found clothes scattered near the pool.
They also found the body of two women floating on the water.
They immediately told fire services and rescue.
Personnel Sipcot fire service unit took out the body and sent it to the GH ponner for autopsy.
According to firefighters, Narmada can be trapped in the pool and the others may sink when trying to save him.
Minister of Man Chief M K Stalin, who offered condolences, announced relief from the RS 5 Lakh respectively against the families of the victims.
“I was very sad to know about the poor incident that caused the death of five people.
Current condolences to family members,” CM said in a statement.
