Nagpur: Although planning to build 42 high storage reservoirs (ESRS) or an overhead water tank, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will be able to build only 16.
The reason: The Civic Agency has failed to obtain land and hand it over for construction.
As a result, the wisdom of water population in many regions tends to continue.
Against the plan to build 42 ESR and one land storage reservoir, WAPCOS – the company entrusted with the work of building an overhead tank – has agreed to build only 17.
Of these, the site chosen for the construction of one ESR in Godhni has failed the strata test.
The Public Health Engineering Department said the NMC would only build 16 ESR through Wapcos.
NMC has received RS272.02 Crore from the central government under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation Schemes and Urban Transformation (Amruption) to strengthen the water supply system in the city.
16 ESR includes five under the Nehru Nagar zone, two including twin types in the Hanuman Nagar zone, each under the Mangalwari zone, Pratap Nagar, Khamla, Gayatri Nagar, Nari-2, Indora, Bharatwada and Wanjari Nagar.
Areas that might face a water crisis include Laxmi Nagar, Binaki, Chinchbhuvan, Bastarwari, Jaripatka, Dhantoli, Boriapura, Zingabai Takli and Ram Nagar.
A senior official from the Public Health Engineering Department told TII that because of the opposition from residents and several government agencies for land, the Civic body had to drop plans to build more ESR.
Even the government of Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has refused to land in place to build an ESR, the official said.
The occupant group also approached the High Court on the Civic body plan to build ESR in public spaces such as parks and playgrounds.
With increasing population, the water crisis is inevitable, and the population of these regions will surely deal with problems, admit the officers.
The official showed that considering the growing city population, NMC had prepared detailed project reports (DPR) to build ESRs in 2015-16.
The delay of providing work also increased the construction costs of five ESRs.
Even the schedule of Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran’s tariff clarified that construction costs have increased significantly.
Now, the NMC must spend the additional $ 75.90 crore from his pocket because the central government will not provide additional funds for ESR construction.
The department has submitted a proposal to be taken at the General Agency meeting held by the Mayor of Dayashankar Tiwari on July 22.
According to the proposal, the construction of 11 ESR is ongoing and the department needs a nod of RS75.90 Crore additional funding.
