Udhagamandalam: Police on Wednesday held 426 people, including 50 women, when they tried to hold a demonstration in the city demanding the reopening shops sealed in the Ooted city market.
The demonstration was planned from the city market to the city office.
However, the police stopped demonstrations in the middle of Ooty’s coffee house on the commercial road.
They were submitted in the wedding room.
The protesters included Manitha Keya Mackal Katchi members, in addition to city market traders.
They demanded the reopening shops sealed in the city market and acted against the Municipal Authority.
They also want the government to reconsider the revision of the lease made in 2016.
City authorities sealed 850 stores located in the market and some outside the market on August 25.
As many as 1,395 stores on the market and outside, owned by Ooty Municipalities, failed to pay an improved rental which was revised over the past five years.
Of the 1,395 shops, only a few of them paid for the perfected rent were partially.
“We have lost business for eight days since the shop sealed.
City officials sealed our shops without prior notice,” said a trader, added, “Manitha Nya Makkal Kaschi holds our demonstration.” Protesters were released at night.
