PANCHKULA: The Panchkula side of the Chandigarh railway station will get connectivity with an underpass for vehicular traffic, enabling commuters to reach the two sides while saving at least 20 to 25 minutes of driving time.
The underpass will connect both ends of the railway station from Panchkula to Chandigarh.
IRSDC joint managing director Promita Roy along with local MLA-cum-Haryana Vidhan Sabha speaker Gian Chand Gupta inspected Panchkula side railway station on Wednesday.
The joint MD said the tendering process to start the work will be called for by August.
Times ViewThis is welcome news for commuters travelling to and fro between the city and Panchkula or those using the Chandigarh railway station route as the traffic flow on this stretch has been increasing by year.
The underpass will cut both travel time and traffic, and will mean an end to traffic jams.
It will also lead to a smoother ride for those going to board a train from anywhere in the Tricity.“The underpass will start from sector 17-18 crossing in Panchkula and open at Industrial Area, Phase I, near Daria village.
It will be used for light transport vehicles, autos, rickshaws and battery operated vehicles.” Gupta said he had written a letter to railway minister Piyush Goyal expressing his concern about the Panchkula side of the railway station and discussed about its upgradation.
Gupta said the minister inprinciple gave permission to spend Rs 215 crore to overhaul the Panchkula side.
Six lifts, 12 escalators, double-storied waiting lounge on the lines of the airport waiting lounge and an underpass are the projects planned.
