CHENNAI: Clear indicators are now available showing the spread of Covid-19 is slowing down in the city after two weeks of an intense lockdown. This came down to 6,194 on May 24, analysis of data from Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) shows. Similarly, the number of containment zones in the city, which is a count of all streets with more than 10 active cases, has dropped from 890 to 765 in the same period. This is a decrease of 14%. In fact, the drop has been steeper (28.8 %) in the southern region (zones 11-15) and the central region (zones 6-10) where it decreased by 14%. In north Chennai (zones 1-5), the number of containment zones increased by 7.5%. Currently, north region has 170, central region 422 and south region has 173 containment zones. Individually, 11 of the 15 zones recorded a drop in the number of containment zones over the same period. The most improved zone in this aspect was Valasaravakkam (zone 11) where containment zones decreased by 33%. The number of wards reporting nil containment zones also increased from 42 to 53 in the space of one week. Only one ward in the city, Beemnampet (ward 123) had more than 20 containment zones as on May 24. In comparison, four wards had reported more than 20 containment zones on May 17. The city has 200 wards. Analysis of active case data shows that active cases in zones like Royapuram and Thiru-vi-ka Nagar have decreased by a substantial margin. For instance, active cases in Royapuram decreased from 2411 to 1970 in the last one week, while in TVK Nagar it dropped from 3942 to 3566. GCC officials have intensified vaccination drives in the city to capitalise on the intensive lockdown and said that is the best way to decrease the spread of the infection.
