Chennai: The oil used to fry fried night you in the nearest restaurant may immediately use government vehicle power including public buses, said food security officials.
Food safety wings have collected five tons of used cooking oil from various hotels and restaurants more than 15 days between August 16 and September 1 as part of a national campaign to use used cooking oil.
Used oil – toxic to health and dangerous for the environment – will be converted to more than 4,500 liters of biodiesel which will be used together with diesel in government vehicles including cars, vans and public buses.
“This is a small start,” said the appointed Food Security Officer (Chennai) Dr.
P Satheesh Kumar.
“The aim is to stop the sale of cooking oil from large food operators and drinks to smaller units.
This will prevent heart disease and cancer among consumers, stop pollution of land and water because it will be thrown into a safe path, reducing air pollution due to emissions Vehicles and reduce diesel costs for the government, “he said.
The city is estimated to produce up to 500 tons of used oil every month, which can produce up to 4.2hhh liter of biodiesel.
In the festive months, collections can increase up to 600 tons, said B Chandrasekar, which has been appointed as a aggregator for used oil for the city.
His team collected used oil from food and beverage operators at periodic intervals.
The team pays up to $ 34 per liter of used oil, which is then handed over to biodiesel producers.
At least 85% of the volume is maintained when used oil is converted to biodiesel.
The Chandrasykar team has started a collection of used cooking oil in Tiruvallur.
They collected 5 tons of oil in March, 3 tons in April and 300kg in May due to increased Covid-19 cases.
But in June, his team collected six tons, which increased to 13 tons in July and 19 tons in August.
For the next six months, the food safety wing aims to increase the oil collection that is used back to at least 100 tons a month.
