Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad train police on Friday arrested five people for allegedly stealing valuables from passengers.
According to the police, the robbers will buy platform tickets and steal valuables from passengers on the platform and train.
Police have restored jewelry and other items worth around RS 2 lakh from criminals.
The defendant was identified as Chand, Maqsood, Tithi, Faizan and Haseeb Khan, all from Ghaziabad.
“There are several gang members who fled right now,” said a police officer.
Amiram Singh, incharge from the Ghaziabad train police station, said that some gang members would take the express train at night while others would target people on the platform.
“Once the victims, both on the train or on the platform, will fall asleep, the robbers are used to escape from the train or platform along with their valuables,” he added.
On Thursday, the defendant had stolen someone’s items, who returned from Qatar and went to his house in Lucknow from Delhi.
“After receiving information, our team was deployed and the defendant was arrested from the Sahibad Train Station along with the goods,” Singh said.
During the interrogation, the people were arrested told the police that they used to do theft in the AC and Sleep Train compartment.
For this, they usually target people at night when most of them fall asleep.
They also claimed so far, they have done more than 40 theft on different trains.
The police have restored items related to 8 cases like that.
All defendants were ordered under 380 (theft at home, etc.) and 411 (dishonestly accepted the stolen property) from the IPC.
They were sent to Judicial detention after producing it in court.
