Mumbai: Number of medical experts, be their neurologists, pharmacists, ayurveds or nurses, registering for PhDs has risen.
While 5,981 health care professionals signed up for doctoral studies in 2016-17, the appropriate number was 1.5 times at 9,330 in 2019-20.
In 2017-18 and 2018-19, registration for PhDs in health sciences was 7,086 and 7,473, said the All India survey of higher education (Aishe) was released by the Ministry of HRD recently.
For 2019-20, 9,330 medical postgraduate is registered in 48 sub-streams, with the highest number registered on the pharmacy at 3,536.
Ayurveda has 361 and dentistry, 507.
At the PhD level, only 153 students from the flow of general drugs while 665 comes from breastfeeding.
“Doctor of Doctor”, a medical professional elite group that can boast a MD-PhD double title, not infrequently in the West.
In India, where research, especially funds, rare, multiple degrees in fewer health sciences.
But the number of Aishe shows the trend can change.
Maharashtra University for Health Sciences (Muhs) Registrar Dr.
Chavan K D said there was an angle of aspirational for the increase in those who pursued “medical PhD”.
“Degrees like MBBS and MD have become important qualifications now.
PhD is desired that adds weight to someone’s CV,” Chavan said.
He said Muhs promoted research and took cues from countries such as Karnataka to introduce the DSC (Doctor of Science) program.
“We see a trend in the increase in the number of DSC in Karnataka, so we plan to start in Muhs too,” he said.
A senior medical teacher from the city said there were indications that several health universities such as Homi Bhabha National University and Science National Academy of Health Science were considering introducing the MD-PhD double degree track in the coming years.
Dr.
M M K Ramesh, President of the Postgraduate Medical Education Board of the National Medical Commission, said the increase in medical PhD aspirants was a function of the overall interest in PhD.
“Most universities offer PhDs that did not occur before,” he said, adding that the availability of easy guidelines to mentor students and the introduction of part-time was a “big hit”.
There is one more reason for the pursuit of doctors.
On July 10, Senior Teacher Dr.
Kalantri from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Wardha Tweeted: “Almost everyone – Hundreds of medical teachers – in medical schools are currently busy obtaining PhD tags after MD.
Willy-nilly.
They must.
No Choice.
This helps a medical school score score when they submit a request for NAAC accreditation.
PhD or perish.
“Dr.
Kalantri said the teacher’s presence with PhD helped the Institute get” more publication “,” better NAAC rankings and “status” to attract More students.
Medical doctors from the clinical subjects such as biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy and pathology are the most likely to take a PhD, said Dr.
Sudarshan Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher.
The only reason there are only 268 neurologists, 204 cardiologists and 129 urologists who register for PhD in 2019-20 are great demand for their services from patients.
“Clinical work is prioritized on research in India.
Therefore, therefore, it is not common for doctors to register for the PhD program, especially in the clinical field,” Dr.
Ballal said.
