53% of all Covid-19 deaths in Jharkhand are senior citizens

RANCHI: Senior citizens make up nearly 53% of all deaths due to Covid-19 infection in Jharkhand since May last year, records available with the state department of health, medical education and family welfare have revealed.
Between May 1, 2020 and May 25 this year, as many as 4,539 people died of Covid-19 infection in the state.
Of them, 2,391 (52.6%) were patients aged 60 years and above.
During the same period, as many as 1,413 people aged between 45-59 died, making up for 31% of the total fatalities.
The fatalities among patients in the 30-44 age group were 12% (530) while deaths among people aged between 15-29 comprised 2.2% (100) of the total fatalities.
Only five children aged below 15 years died of the Covid-19 infection so far.
During the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the total deaths were at 1,030 while 3,509 people died during the second wave (April 1- May 25).
While 548 senior citizens died in the first wave, their death toll during the second wave was at 1,843.
Nearly 1,162 people aged between 45-59 years died in the second wave in contrast to the 352 deaths recorded during the first wave.
As many as 436 people between 30-44 years died during the second wave in comparison to the 94 deaths during the first wave.
The death toll in the age group of 15-29 years was 67 during the second wave compared to 33 during the first.
While four children died in the first wave, only died during the second.
Jharkhand had detected 1.18 lakh Covid-19 infections during the first wave while cases nearly doubled during the second wave (2.11 lakh).
The state’s positivity rate was 0.79% on Monday.
Till June 7, the state had recorded 5,060 deaths and 3.41 lakh positive cases, the department said.
