Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has spent more than RS500 more per metric ton (MT) for garbage collection from door to door, but two personal agents – AG Enviro Limited and BVG India – do not follow many provisions and conditions of the agreement.
The main violation is that the institution still has not collected separate waste from the source point, namely individual homes.
Even after the passing almost two years, NMC still throws almost 57% of mixed waste from a total of around 1,202 mt of garbage produced in the city every day on the Blandewadi page.
Both agencies carry 39.2% wet and 4.1% waste dry to the page.
NMC pays Rs1,950 per MT to AG and RS1,800 per MT to BVG to collect garbage doors to the door.
There are provisions in the agreement that NMC can impose a fine of RS100 per vehicle from the first day of service to collect and carry mixed waste.
The two companies have pressed around 472 vehicles into the action, including 300 vehicles for garbage collection to door and transportation.
But the Solid Waste Department of NMC (SWM) and zonal officers from 10 zones ignores blatant violations.
Nodal Officer (SWM) Dr.
Mahalle admitted that the mixture was transferred to the bandwadi page.
“Immediately, it will be stopped and only a separate waste will be collected from every home,” he said, adding that the company would be fined because he did not hold on to the provisions of the agreement.
Residents from across the city are not happy with the services of the garbage collection agent.
Kavita Singh, a resident of Surendagonadh, who is under the Dharampeth zone, claims that he separates garbage with diligently.
“But the collector mixes it every morning,” he said.
Many residents have stopped separating waste at the source, he added.
Environmental activists and Director of the Sustainable Development Center Leena Budhe asked why the separation of waste did not occur when NMC spent taxpayers.
“Even though some residents realized the segregation and importance, they chose not to do it because they saw their efforts of waste, when they found a private contractor to dispose of separate garbage in the same container,” he showed.
The founder of Green Vigil Foundation and Green Activists Kaustav Chatterjee said, “The separation of household waste is the responsibility of the generator, but the solid waste collection agency has been ordered many times to educate residents about the separation of waste and do not take unthinkable waste.” He added, “We have witnessed for the past three years that various conscious campaigns did not produce desired results and only a small portion of the population that handed over separate waste, but residents were also very demotivated after paying attention to garbage collectors who mixed the naughty -Segregated waste.” Chatterjee More Continue saying, “NMC needs to make strict rules not lift unthinkable waste.
Based on experiments, the same thing can be implemented in a limited area.” According to Budhe and Chatterjee, even when the contract is given, it is the responsibility of NMC to monitor and supervise the work of the contractor .
“Enforcement is the key and this must come from the Civic body,” they said.
