Pune: The case has been registered with the six members ‘Jaat Panchayat’ (the case of the caste leader) in Sangli Regency from Maharashtra for allegedly ordered a social boycott of at least 13 couples for inter-caste marriages, police said on Sunday.
JAAT PIRAHWAT NANDIWAL COMMUNITY, Nomaden tribe, has provided new orders of social boycott during his meeting on January 9 in Palus in Sangli, they said.
A man, who is one of the victims and complainants in this case, said 13 pairs were married for years in various parts of the district.
Vikas Jadhav Inspector from the Palus Police Station said, “We have registered a case against six members Jaat Panchayat for allegedly boycotting 13 couples to get married outside their community.” Complaints in this connection were submitted by Prakash Bhosale (42), who said he himself had made a wedding between caste in 2007, following where he was ostracized from the community by Jaat Pancayat.
“There are some victims like me from our community, who were also boycotted because they were married outside the caste.
In December last year, a meeting was held by several community members in Karad (in Satara Regency), where it was decided that these couples must be permitted To be part of the community again.
I attended the meeting, “he said.
However, several members then objected to this decision and called the meeting on January 9 in Palus, where he was conveyed that the couple could not be brought back to the community, said Bhosale.
“After that, we approached Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti, and with their help, a complaint was registered against six members Jaat Panchayat,” he said.
The Jadhav inspector said six people were ordered in the relevant section of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC) and Maharashtra Protection of Social Boycycles (Prevention, Prevention and Changes) of Act, 2016.
