Panaji: With each election passing, the role of money and muscle strength has grown in Goa’s politics, and this is evident from the fact that 62% of the 301 candidates fight in assembly constituencies are crorepatis, while 26% have criminal records, according to the analysis by the association for reform Democrats (ADR).
Of the 301 candidates, 77, or 26%, face criminal charges.
In 2017, 15% of candidates had criminal cases registered against them.
There are also leaps in candidates with serious criminal charges.
Even though there were only three candidates in 2007, this time there were 53 candidates on serious charges, including rape.
The state coordinator ADR Bhasker Assoldekar also said in 2017, there were six candidates charged with severe crimes and whose net worth more than Rs 10 Crore.

Congress has the highest number of candidates who face criminal charges, with 17 of the 37 party candidates boast criminal records.

“The role of money in our election is evident from the fact that all major political parties provide tickets to rich candidates.
