Pune: A 77-year-old man, who has sought assistance from foreigners to secure a mini statement of his bank account from the ATM, found himself to fail Rs60,000.
The incident occurred at the ATM kiosk in Sangvi on September 14, when the stranger, with the pretext of offers to help the elderly complaining, exchanging the debit card with other people’s cards, police said.
The elderly man, a resident of Pimple Gurav, filed a complaint of the police on Sunday.
An officer from Police Sangvi said the complainant had gone to the Sangvi branch from the public sector bank to update the passbook.
“Passbooks cannot be updated because of some problems.
Foreigners approach the man and say he will be able to help him get a mini statement from the ATM,” he said.
The complainant who did not suspect accompany the man to the ATM kiosk.
“He gave his debit card and shared a pin,” the officer said.
He said the man had a mini statement and returned the card to the complainant.
“On Friday, senior citizens received an SMS alert about the withdrawal of Rs 60,000 from his bank account,” the officer said.
The elderly man then checked his debit card and was surprised to see it belonging to someone else.
“He realized strangers at the bank had exchanged the card,” the officer said.
The clerk said they had collected CCTV recordings from the bank.
