80 evacuated after bldg balcony crashes

Surat: One man was wounded when a first-floor balcony with a low-rise apartment dropped at Udhna on Saturday.
The wounded was sitting at the balcony as it vanished, said officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).
The SMC group and authorities evacuated 80 inhabitants from 31 homes in the Lakshmi Apartment since the construction arrangement was in dilapidated state.
SMC officials stated that the balcony of this three-storied building dropped when a repair work was happening.
“Many labourers were utilizing heavy machines in the flat through work.
Because of the vibration by the machine that is heavy, the gallery failed.
The building was constructed in 1985 and also its construction is now feeble,” stated an SMC officer.
After analyzing the construction, the structural engineer of SMC eliminated some part at the front part of the construction to decrease weight.
“Five members of a household didn’t have alternative accommodation and they’re being retained in SMC neighborhood hall, although other inhabitants went to remain at their alternative order,” said the officer.
Following the hazardous portion was eliminated, SMC team helped the occupants to remove valuables and also crucial goods in their apartments.
After consultation with all the structural engineer, then the taxpayers might need to choose if they would like to fix the building or demolish it,” stated SMC official.
