81% of the population in the PCMC area has antibodies: sero-survey

Pune: Bulk vaccination tends to play a major role in the protection of loans against Covid-19, the latest SERO survey Pune District has revealed.
The Sero survey, carried out in the area under Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), showed 81% (8,207) of 10,082 residents in the sample found to have immunity (covid antibodies) against SARS-COV-2.
The sero survey, the biggest so far in the metropolitan area of Pune (PMR), a population closed 200 housing clusters, including slums, plots and middle-class apartments, at eight PCMC zones from 16 to 26 June.
In June 6-26, the age group, sero-prevalence is 70%, which has been associated with various factors such as direct or indirect exposure to the NCOV virus from family members exposed.
The highest antibody prevalence (91.1%) in the age group 45-60 and around 90.5% in senior citizens (60 years and above).
This is probably due to higher coverage of adult vaccination in Pimpri Chinchwad, experts say.
The PCMC vaccination figure until July 2 revealed that 3.68 Lakh beneficiaries from the 45+ group were vaccinated with the first dose while 1.25 lakh had received the second.
In the age group 18-44, 1.65 the beneficiary of the Lakh had received the first JAD and the second 4,284.
The first Sero survey, involving 5,000 residents, was conducted at Pimpri Chinchwad from 7 to 17 October last year.
Sero-survey checks blood samples for a certain class of SARS-COV-2 antibodies called Immunoglobulin G, or IgG, which appear within two weeks of infection.
These antibodies can offer several immunity (protection).
“The important home-home message of the two sero-surveys in Pune is that the herd of immunity has increased from around 34% at the end of the first wave to around 81% at the end of the second wave,” said the senior clinical epidemiology of Amitav Banerjee.
“The very important inference from this sero survey is that natural infections can provide eternal immunity (protection).
The results of two sero surveys in PMR must lead to rational vaccination policies,” he said.
Rajendra Wabale Hospital, Dean of Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) in Pimpri, said, “The main difference between the Sero survey last year and now is vaccination, which has provided desired protection to the elderly population.” He said, “Because this is a random survey, it shows that regardless of natural exposure to viruses, inoculation drives have played an important role in producing antibodies in various age groups.” PCMC Commissioner Rajesh Patil said, “This survey offers a slight relief for the fact that the 81% population shows sero prevalence.
But we cannot forget the remaining 19% of the population.”
