‘86 health units lack proper fire fighting system’

Ghaziabad: Two major government hospitals, District Combined Hospital and MMG District Hospital, are among the 86 healthcare facilities in Ghaziabad that are operating without a proper fire fighting system.
A recent inspection carried out by the district fire department has revealed that 86 of the 112 private and government hospitals in the district do not have proper fire fighting systems in place.
Of the 86 facilities, 14 are government hospitals and health centres and 72 are private hospitals and nursing homes.
The list includes the community health centres in Muradnagar and Modinagar and the primary health centres in Nangla Ator, Dasna, Bamheta and Bhowapur as well.
Several private Covid hospitals are also on the list and till about last month, most were full.
According to officials, following an order issued by the state home department on May 25, the fire department inspected 112 healthcare facilities and of them, 43 were Covid hospitals.
Chief fire officer Sunil Kumar Singh said the home department, in its order, had asked officials to complete the inspection within one week.
Officials said of the 112 facilities, 26 were found to be working as per norms.
The fire department has sent its report to the administration and the chief medical officer.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), however, has said that the issuance of no-objection certificates (NOCs) from the fire and pollution departments should not be an annual affair.
IMA’s media in-charge in Ghaziabad, Dr Navneet Verma, said these are “harassment tactics” used by the government against private hospitals.
“A press conference has been called on Tuesday,” he said.
IMA district president Dr Ashish Agarwal said hospitals that have been named by the officials have been asked to put a proper system in place.
