9 trucks, 10 BOVs to handle waste from fireworks

Expecting the city to produce around 22 tons of waste from fireworks, Greater Chennai Corporation has placed a plan to collect it separately and will coordinate with the TN pollution control body (TNPCB) to ensure it does not come into contact with ordinary waste.
The Civic body has set aside nine trucks and 10 vehicles operated with batteries (BOV) specifically for waste from fireworks.
It also sets a water truck across the zone if a fire occurs.
“Since October 2, we have created awareness about the disposal of waste from fireworks.
We have instructed residents to separate and hand over this waste to maintenance workers who collect it in BOVS.
We also install posters and pamphlets together with residents.
Sweepers will clear the waste The road to be collected separately by the BOV operator.
Two BOVs in each ward will be allocated to this purpose, “said a representative from Urbaser-Skeet, the contractor responsible for the management of solid waste in seven zones.
Waste will be submitted to the facilities established in each ward and equipped with a fire extinguisher and other safety steps.
Then, it will be transported to the TNPCB gummudipoondi facility.
Similar procedures will be followed in the environment handled by the body of the Civic and Engineer Ramky Enviro.
Civic body sanitation officials will monitor the entire process.
Last year, the Arjamal Zone and Anna Nagar produced maximum waste from fireworks with more than 6 tons collected.
Workers also collect about one or two tons from the Kodambakkam and Teynampet zone.
Water trucks will also be placed on the page in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi and all fire safety steps will be implemented if there is waste from fireworks mixed with household waste.
Corporate officials urge residents and apartment owners to separate waste properly.
