PANAJI: Eyebrows have been raised in the academic circles of the selection criteria adopted for the Vice Chancellor (VC) post from the University of Goa, because the selection committee is not in accordance with the norms arranged by the Grants University (UGC) commission.
The Commission Regulation mandates that the Selection Committee must have one member nominated by it, the criteria that the current panel – who will interview candidates on Wednesday – have not been obeyed.
The committee formed by the Governor for the Election of the VC University of Goa consists of the former Director of NCert Jagmohan Singh Rajput which is a prospective Chancellor, Drdo’s G Satish Reddy who is a candidate for the state government, and Director of CSIR General Shekhar Mande who is a candidate for the University Executive Board.

However, a senior government officer said, “The committee formed for VC selection is not in accordance with the UGC guidelines.” Defending the current selection panel constitution, Registrants of Goa Radhika Nayak University, “While the Member who is nominated by UGC is needed in accordance with the 7th Payment Guidelines, the current committee has been based on the previous law which only requires three committee members.” He said the fourth member would be asked only if the law was changed, but explained that because there was no amendment carried out, the panel still consisted of three members.
“The Cave Statute is amended in connection with the majority of the provisions of the 7th payment commission, except provisions related to the Selection Committee for VC.
Proposed to be carried out almost three months ago but continued to be held,” said Nayak.
The 2018 UGC Regulation also provides selection for VC posts must be through the right identification by three to five panels through public notifications, nominations, or talent search processes, or combinations.
They further mandate that members of the search-cum-selection committee must be people who emerge in the field of higher education and should not be associated in any way with the universities concerned or universities.
“Search-cum-selection committee will provide the right unity for academic excellence, exposure to the higher education system in countries and abroad, and adequate experience in academic and administrative governance …
One member of the Search-Selection Committee will be nominated by the Chair UGC for elections VCS countries, private universities and considered, “regulatory countries.
As the term VC University VC, Varun Sahni, ended on August 18, the University has begun the procedure to identify new candidates for posting.
It has received more than 260 applications for that position, maybe the first case of the extraordinary request for the job.
Gu Vice-Chancellor holds a position for a period of five years.
Of the 260 candidates, 23 has been selected.
This has now been invited to a personal interview with the search committee on Wednesday.
