Thane: Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has a plan to deploy staff to help the Ministry of Forestry and ensure no more encroachment is reported along the Parsik Hillslopes in Kalwa.
The decision came after an eight-year-old girl suffered minor injuries after a small landslide reported along the Parsik hills in Gholai Nagar, Kalwa, in Wee Wednesday.
Six houses suffered damage but fortunately there was no loss of life.
According to Patole Shankar, the assistant Commissioner of the city in Kalwa Ward, the incident was reported at around 3am when a small cache mud slid from the slopes of the Parsik hillside and fell up with the forest in Jeevan Deep Chawl below.
The sleeping chauhan family in one of the huts was roughly awakened because of noise because a little stone crashed into their asbestos roof and injured their sleeping young princess.
Immediately, the family panicked lifted an alarm after residents were evacuated with their forests and went down to the hill to a safer place.
A team of city officials rushed to the place with forest officials and lowered the damaged structure to ensure residents did not return.
“The hill where the land seems to be removed to avoid the possibility of landslides because there are hundreds of huts around it,” Patole said.
Incidentally, this place is close to the area where landslides are reported last month claiming five lives.
Locals said there seemed to be no lesson from the July incident and apart from several warnings, residents continue to risk their lives and remain in such dangerous conditions.
“We will deploy staff together with the forest team to ensure no further added effective here,” said Patole.
