Tokyo: Avani Lekhara shooter will be a flag bearer of the country’s contingent during the Tokyo paralympics closing ceremony on Sunday.
The 19-year-old Lekhara trailblazer has won gold at the R-2 Women’s Air Rifle which stands the SH1 event on Monday before claiming 50m Rifle 3 position sh1 bronze on Friday.
“Avani will be a flag bearer and there will be 11 participants from the Indian contingent during the closing ceremony,” said an Indian Paralympics Committee (PCI) official.
Lekhara, who was paralyzed under the waist after a car accident in 2012, was just an Indian who won several medals in a game edition.
Before Lekhara, Joginder Singh Sodhi Whad won a silver medal and two bronze in Paralympics 1984.
Other shooters Singhraj Adana joined an exclusive club on Saturday when he added silver in a 50m pistol p4 pistol to bronze on the 10m water pistol sh1 event he won on Tuesday.
Shot-Putter Tek Chand is an Indian flag carrier for the opening ceremony of Paralympics on August 24 after he replaced the jumper of Mariyappan Thangaveu at the last minute.
Mariyappan, who won the silver here, was quarantined along with five other Indians after being closely related to Covid positive people during a flight to Tokyo.
