Pune: Intensifying Surveillance in the middle of celebration season officials, food and drug administration (FDA) has told the owner of the sweet shop to display ‘the best before the date’ for loose candies stored in trays / containers.
Pune FDA Joint Commissioner (Food) Shivaji Desai said the owner of the sweet and other shop in the food business can decide on ‘best before dates depending on the nature of the product and local conditions.
“List of indicative shelf life of various types of candy is provided in the guidelines for the safety and quality of traditional milk products.
This list is available on the FSSAI website,” Desai said.
Not concentrated with the norm can withdraw a fine of RS1 Lakh for sweet shops with an annual turnover of less than Rs 12 lakh, and fine to RS2 lakh for those who have an annual turnover of RS12 Lakh and above, officials said.
Apex Food Regulatory Agency, Indian Food and Food Standard Association (FSSAI), in the notification in February 2020, said the norm would be effective throughout the country starting June 1 2020.
“We ensure compliance throughout the year.
However, we intensify supervision during the celebration season when candy sold and consumed in large quantities and there is a possibility that a higher norm is running, “Desai said.
The owner of the sweet shop in Wanoworie says every sweet made of or containing solid milk must be consumed in 24 hours.
“It is the basic rule that needs to be followed by consumers,” he said.
Pediatrician Sharad Sokekhedkar, also a former state president of the Indian Medical Association, said eating long candy after they were made can cause food poisoning or vomiting and nausea.
Health activists also, said the expiration date will help consumers remain safe.
