New Delhi: Filippo Grand, the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees, has asked Pakistan to accept the new entry of refugees from Afghanistan, showing that if these refugees were sent back due to lack of documentation, they might be at risk.
He said these refugees might be from a minority or they might have other problems, Dawn News reported.
Grandi said the future was full of uncertainty and risk, but it was important that “we in the international community continue to be involved with the Taliban to advance and save Afghan and regions of disasters”.
He said there was no large refugee flow but some Afghans came to Pakistan, and they may have specific needs.
Grandi said Pakistan was very careful about the refugees and wanted to be very careful to examine who entered the country, added the report.
He claimed that the security situation in Afghanistan improved and the UN refugee body (UNHCR) would be able to increase humanitarian assistance if the organization was supported and sufficient resources.
“The security situation has increased, but we are still worried about terrorist threats.
We hope the new government to unite and that they do not have a division among themselves.
If not, it will be a destabilization factor,” he said.
Grandi said the international community must find a way to support the function of the Afghanistan and its institutions, the report said.
“If the state stops functioning, it will provoke a crisis that is far greater than the humanitarian crisis.
UNHCR has not witnessed a large outflow of refugees but if the country collapses, many people will seek protection in other countries.
Therefore it is important to prevent the situation,” he emphasize.
