Cyber Security Lawyers Fall Prey for Offers ‘Sextital’

Gurgaon: A lawyer who received the WhatsApp video call from an unknown number was targeted by the extension, who sent him a sex chat clip where his face was embedded.
The defendant threatened to upload a morphed video on various social media platforms if the lawyer did not pay Rs 1 lakh.
It was in the first week of September that the lawyer – who had himself helped the police and other people in some cases of cyber fraud – got whatsapp video calls.
When he receives a call, the screen becomes empty and the call is cut off itself.
A few minutes later, the lawyer received whatsapp message with a video clip where his face had been superimposed to another man who committed sexual acts while talking to a woman.
The lawyer then received a call from another number and the government demanded Rs 1 Lakh.
“The caller threatens to upload videos on social media and send it to all my friends if I don’t pay money,” he told Toi.
Worried that fraudsters might hack their social media accounts too, lawyers deactivate them all.
“He continued to call me from various numbers.
At one point, I stopped receiving a call from an unknown number,” he said.
The victim consulted with his friends and approached the Cyber Police Station on 3.
The police conducted an initial investigation and registered a case against an unknown person on Monday below Section 384 IPC (extortion) and section 67a containing sexually explicit actions or behaviors) .
“We tried to track the location where the video was uploaded.
We also track the numbers used to make calls,” said ACP (DLF) Karan Goel.
Some cases of extortion like that, where victims are targeted with whatsapp video calls, have come under the police scanner lately.
However, the police believe that the number of cases like that may be more because many people give up on extortion demands and avoid complaints to be afraid of social stigma.
In July, another lawyer had become a victim of “Sextital” and was asked to pay Rs 5 lakh by the defendant.
He was originally reluctant to approach the police, but filed a complaint after being persuaded by friends and his family.
Private company senior executives are also targeted in the same way earlier this year.
“One night, I got a video call from an unknown number.
When I received a call, there was a naked woman on the screen.
For a few seconds, I can’t understand what happened.
I disconnected the call.
A few moments later, I received a video call Where my face was embedded, “he said.
The executive pays Rs 30,000 to the caller after a lot of negotiations and does not approach the police.
He said some of his colleagues were also targeted through video calls but moved away from the inn.
