Thiruvananthapuram: In a big catch, the police Chiraykezhu had arrested five men who allegedly smuggled marijuana and dangerous synthetic drugs.
Police identified the defendants as Sajeev Munna, 28, Mubarak, 28, Niyas, 24, Gokul aka Kannan, 23 and Akhil Fernandez, 23.
Except Akhil Fernandez, who is a resident of Vettucaud in the city, the other from Mudapuram near Chirayinkezhu.
The police have also confiscated two kilograms of marijuana and 62 grams of MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) from the defendant.
They also confiscated a car where the gang traveled.
The police said the gang was intercepted and arrested near Mudapuram on Friday afternoon.
Their arrest was recorded at the same night.
They are produced before jurisdiction judge on Saturday.
The judge has returned them in court custody.
The police also said that the gang was caught with the help of members of the Anti-Narcotics District Special Action (Dansaf) under the rural district police.
All gang members are customary violators involved in various crimes in the past, police said.
Therefore, Dansaf monitored their activities over the past six months.
Based on the intelligence collected by Dansaf officials, the arrest was carried out.
The gang has bought a contraband goods from Bangalore.
Their friends who work in Bangalore help them get substance.
They smuggled on the country’s borders in the car they rented for this purpose.
Gang members admitted that they had smuggled marijuana and drugs to the country several times in the past also using the same mode.
They will sell smuggled goods among small travelers after smuggling them to the country, police said.
This is the second main narcotics catch made by the Chiraykezezhu police in a week.
