Dumka: The Department of West Benggal Water Resources, which controls the operation and maintenance of Massanjore Dams here, on Thursday night opened the reservoir 19, from 32 floodgates, because the surface of the Mayuraxa river swelled due to the rain that was unrelenting.
Of the 19 gates opened, 16 was a high tailed water door, two low-level water doors and others were intended to feed irrigation channels.
Together, the gate released 15,000 cusec water.
“The decision to open this gate was taken by our seniors by remembering the sudden flow of water during the rain caused by the Typhoon Gulab and the increase in the next water surface, which was recorded above 386ft, close to the 398ft hazard,” Shyama Prasad Roy, assistant Engineer Department of West Bengal Water Resources, said on Friday.
In August, 21 floods of Massanjore dam opened after the water level reached a danger.
Previously, the water level had reached a danger in 1978 and in 1999, the official said.
