Cox’s Bazaar: Five Rohingya men have been arrested for the murder of a leading community leader in a refugee camp in Bangladesh, said the police said Sunday, added that they investigated militant groups.
Mohib Telam – A high profile fare for more than 800,000 strong Muslim minorities that escape from Myanmar’s military in a mass exodus – killed by gunmen in one of the camping camps in Southeast Bangladesh.
His family blamed a guerrilla from the Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) merger, a group behind several attacks in Myanmar, with activists who claimed they were angry with the increasingly popular camp in camps.
“We have arrested five people over the murder of Mohib Ullah,” the commander of the police unit responsible for the security of the camp, Naimul Haque, was told.
Two of the men were detained for three days to be questioned, the authorities said.
The other three have not appeared in court.
A 28-year-old Rohingya man was also arrested for last week’s murder.
The six who were investigated for the link to Arsa, the opposite blamed “unknown criminals” for Ullah’s death.
A member of the rights group led by Mohib Ullah accused that one of those arrested, Mohammad Elias, was a member of Arsa and had threatened a popular leader in June.
Members, who asked to remain anonymous because he was afraid of his salvation, said at least ten group leaders of Mohib Ullah hid when they fear more attacks.
And while the authorities have increased security in camps, the Mohib Ullah family said they were afraid to even step out their homes.
“We can’t get out of the house.
They (Arsa) threaten to kill us,” said the younger brother of Mohib Ullah Habibullah.
“We accept threats through audio messages in the past few days.
I am now panicked.
We received the threat of death to say that Arsa members killed my brother.” A spokesman for the Cox Bazar Police, Rafiqul Islam said they were ready to provide security for the Ullah family if they appealed.
On Friday the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called for “fast, and independent investigations” into murder.
