New Delhi: In what could be a big boost for global efforts to protect at least 30% of the planet in 2030, India on Thursday joined the ‘High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for nature and people’ to encourage this goal in front The coming United Nations conference on biodiversity.
Known as the 30×30 target, this goal is the center of the agreement called the global biodiversity framework post-2020.
More than 70 countries are now part of this coalition with India into the first Brics countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) to join the ‘High Ambition Coalition’ (HAC).
India’s move will encourage all countries to officially adopt this goal at the UN Conference – 15th Session (COP15) Convention on biodiversity (CBD) – which will be held in two parts due to Covid-19 pandemic.
The first will be virtually held from October 11 to October 15.
Hosted by China, the second part of COP15 will be held directly in Kunming for 25 April next year.
“India will ensure all support in meeting the target of global biodiversity,” said Rp.
Gupta, Secretary, Environment, while the country officially joined HAC in a ceremony and handed the agreement signed to Emmanuel Lenain, the French Ambassador to India, on Thursday .
.
Then when nearly overcoming the Summit of US-India’s fashion ideas (USIBC), Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav talked about some of the country’s actions to expand its forest cover and save wildlife and biodiversity.
“We have developed ‘biodiversity registers’ and expanded joint forests and tree cover to 24.56% of the total geographical regions of the country.
We conduct new programs for species conservation such as lions and dolphins, including,” he said.
Welcoming the Indian displacement joined HAC, Lenain, said it would be a “real game changer” and would increase multilateral efforts.
Stated that India was the main player for biodiversity protection, he said that this coalition aimed to promote international agreements to protect at least 30% of the world and the world of the world in 2030.
“India sends a strong signal to the world to be taken by all countries of natural protection seriously.
we hope their brave commitment to support the 30×30 global target inspires other countries in this region to join HAC, “said Brian O’Donnell, director, campaign.
Countries as part of HAC collectively encourage 30×30 targets ahead of finalization of new goals to protect biodiversity in the next 10 years (2021-30).
The effort to have the coalition was initiated in the ‘KTT Planet’ in Paris in January.
These efforts came in the background of the Global Global Global Report Outlook Diversity, released by the United Nations CBD in September last year, which showed how none of the 20 conservation targets agreed over the past 10 years could be fully fulfilled by the Word.
It blames human pressure on unsustainable resources and policies to cause environmental damage throughout the world.
In the progress of 20 Global Biodiversity Targets – known as the aichi biodiversity target, which was agreed upon in 2010 with a deadline of 2020, the report concluded that the world had “did not achieve” 14 targets (related to sustainable agriculture, reducing pollution and dangerous subsidies For biodiversity, and conservation of species, corals, fish / oceans, forests / habitats, genetic materials and ecosystems, among others) while only “partially reaches” six of the targets in the deadline.
