PARIS: World number one Ash Barty was able to play an injury issue and stave off an upset from American Bernarda Pera using a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph in her opening game of the French Open on Tuesday.
Returning into the Philippe Chatrier court following her maiden Grand Slam triumph in 2019, the 25-year-old Australian appeared to be cruising contrary to the 70th-ranked Pera if she ended up 5-2 in the opening set.
Barty, who jumped the claycourt Grand Slam last year following the COVID-19 pandemic, began moving sluggishly afterwards, obviously bothered by an accident, then took a medical timeout in the conclusion of their second group following Pera levelled the game.
The Australian, who first began the game having a heavily-strapped left forearm, kept fighting and found a means to victory and another round meeting against Magda Linette of both Poland and also Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet.
