GUWAHATI: The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) has sent a proposal to the state education department to reduce the number of subjects to three from the existing six in this year’s Class XII state board examination.
Even as the health department may soon give its nod to conduct this year’s Class X and XII state board exams because of an improvement in the pandemic situation, the education board wants to ease the pressure on students.
The Class X boards may also be held simultaneously in five subjects, leaving aside the elective sixth subject.
“There is every possibility that the number of papers will decrease.
For every stream, the proposal is to make it mandatory for a student to appear in only three out of five compulsory subjects in the Class XII board exam,” an AHSEC source told TOI.
As of now, the Class XII boards have made it mandatory for students to write all five subjects with one optional subject.
If the education department approves the board’s proposal, the number of compulsory subjects will come down to three from five.

“The question papers are in safe custody.
Soon after getting the green signal from the state government, these will be sent to the exam centres concerned,” the AHSEC official said.
Though the Centre has been in a dilemma over conducting the CBSE board exams, state education minister Ranoj Pegu is firm on conducting the exams.
Speaking to media persons, Pegu said, “We will decide on the state board exams in the next one or two days.
The state government has taken into account the views of various organizations, intellectuals, educationists and other stakeholders.
The decision-making process will start from 4.30 pm today,” he told the media on Tuesday afternoon.
The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (Seba), which oversees Class X board exams, has already expressed its readiness to conduct the exam within 15 days of the Covid situation returning to ‘normal’.
The All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) had two rounds of talks with Seba recently to ensure the secured future of a record number of 4.40 lakh students who have registered for appearing in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Assam High Madrassa (AHM) examinations.
“Seba officials are in no mood to cancel the exam.
The number of papers may be curtailed to five but the exams will be held,” said a board member at Seba.
In the Class X state boards, a student needs to compulsorily appear in six subjects, out of which one is elective.
“Keeping the core subjects in the schedule, the elective subject may be left out this year,” he added.
