Mexico City: Mexican authorities on Saturday arrested two people suspected of being involved in a photo shoot between rival gangs on the beach near the Cancun Caribbean resort which killed two people.
Armed Clash, which took place on Thursday, was the second to shake Mexican virtual riviera in the past few weeks and is another blow to the tourism industry which is still recovering from the Coronavirus pandemic battle.
The Attorney General’s Office for the eastern state of Quintana Roo said he had managed to find three of the four suspected shooters used to travel to the beach.
They arrested two people who had been driving, while someone managed to escape.
“Two drivers were arrested while the third escaped, and even there was a shot with police officers, who managed to escape to the forest area,” Attorney General said in a statement.
The office also said the initial investigation showed that the groups involving that day had been divided by the Sinaloa cartel which “is a debatable area for the sale of drugs.” The shooting on November 4 took on the beach outside one of the luxury resort hotels near Cancun, a popular tourist destination.
The local authority said the clash was among the rivals gang of drug dealers.
Mexico was disturbed by a bloodshed associated with a cartel that had seen more than 300,000 people killed because the government mobilized the military in the war in drugs in 2006.
While Riviera Maya, homes for Cancun and other leading resorts including Playa Carmen and Tulum, are generally considered more Safe than many countries, there has been an increase in violence.
Last month, two tourists from Germany and India were killed in a shootout between the alleged drug dealers in Tulum, while several other people were injured.
In 2017, three foreigners were among the five killed in shootings at the Electronic Music Festival at Playa del Carmen.
The incident has led European countries and the United States to warn their residents about the risk of visiting the Caribbean Mexico, among the world’s top coastal goals.
Tourism represents 8.5 percent of gross domestic product Mexico and is a major economic activity in the southeast region, which includes virtual Riviera.
Although Mexico remains open to foreigners during the Pandemic Covid-19, a decline in the number of visitors has taken severe victims in the country’s tourism industry.
