Kolkata: A recent tweak in the ‘adopt-an-animal’ policy by the Alipore Zoo has caused new interests by ‘foster parents’ in the scheme.
This scheme, launched in August 2013, was only available in the format of annual adoption fees for several months ago.
But in September, zoo officials decided to introduce a monthly scheme for adoption after requests from people who were interested.
“For example, the annual adoption fee for tigers is Rs 2.00,000.
But recently, we introduce a monthly fee option of Rs 20,000.
In this way, anyone interested can adopt the animal even for a month,” said the director of the Zoo Assistant Kumar Samanta.
Adoption recently occurred through a monthly scheme including Zebra (September 6 to October 5 for Rs 3,000), Kangarou (September 6 to October 5 for Rs 2,500), a Cockatiel (September 12 to Rs 200) and an Iguana (October 25 to October November 24 for Rs 500).
And, this new scheme seems to produce results.
Compared to 2020-21 and 2019-20, when only four and five adoption, respectively, according to the access – according to the data on the site Zoo – 19 animals have been adopted this year, including four through a monthly scheme.
Eleven adoption occurred after the introduction of a new scheme.
