Villupuram: A checkdam built across the Thenpennaiyar River in Thalavanur in Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs 25 Crore only a year that was dismantled on Monday using explosives after a part of the flood.
400 Meter-Checkdam was inaugurated in September last year by the previous AIDMK government.
Within four months, the portion of the pillar that supported the broken window leaves triggered extensive protests by villagers complained about the quality of construction.
On November 9, another part of the dam was broken.
Riverbank near the damaged part began to griss quickly after the water was released from the Dam Sathanur on Saturday forcing revenue officials to destroy the checkdam to prevent every possibility.
Efforts to destroy the check dam on Sunday failed because of explosives used too little to destroy the structure.
