Chennai: Tamil Nadu has become the first country in the country to offer 81 free savings procedures worth Rs 1 lakh against accident victims in the first 48 hours of their hospitalization in 609 government and private hospitals in the state.
This scheme also includes those from states and other countries.
Scheme – Nammai Kaakkum 48 (saving our lives in 48 hours) – Announced on Thursday will be offered to all accident victims on the road for a year.
This will be filled with the ministerial health insurance scheme next year after being reviewed.
Officials said the scheme would cover everyone who did not have insurance.
The state has set aside Rs 50 Crore for the first phase of the implementation of ‘Innuyir Kaappom Thittam’ (saving valuable lives).
“The procedure carried out under a new scheme is not included in the current state insurance scheme,” said a senior official.
After the meeting of the Chief Justice of the MK Stalin about the safety of the road with the Minister and official on Thursday, the government announced a comprehensive policy including legislation of emergency medical services and established road safety authorities.
The state will frame medical emergency actions that will focus on five elements – emergency response, rescue and resuscitation, damage control operations, bring people back to normal and rehabilitation.
“The idea is to empower more people to help victims of accidents on the road, create awareness, set protocols and bring maintenance standards.
We will create an emergency code and details of things to do in action,” the official said.
The state will involve students from schools, colleges, NGOs, and community members to change the safety of the road to the people’s movement, he said.
The state will also form road safety authorities that will offer administrative and financial support to implement road safety policies, maintain a registry, research on causes of accident prevention and monitoring design and quality.
